What is Dr. Hanna’s Butterfly Genioplasty?
Dr. Hanna developed the Butterfly Genioplasty to solve a problem that has followed chin surgery for decades. In a traditional genioplasty, the chin bone is cut, moved into a better position, and held with a standard plate. The bigger the movement, the more likely it is to leave a visible notch or step where the new chin meets the rest of the jaw.
The Butterfly Genioplasty replaces that standard plate with one designed by Dr. Hanna and customized for each patient using 3D imaging and virtual surgical planning. Its wings extend out along the jaw and bridge the gap the movement leaves behind, recreating a smooth, continuous jawline. The space beneath the plate is filled with bone graft, and the plate holds that graft in place and protects it while it heals into new bone.
Because the plate is used to create shape to the chin as well as stabilizing the bone, Dr. Hanna can control the width of the central bone, making it narrow or wide. Each plate is shaped to the patient’s own anatomy and desired goals for final shape of the chin. Even with large movements, the shape prevents notching or steps along the side of the bone cut so the transition is smooth and natural-looking.
