About Dr. Todd Hanna
Dr. Todd Hanna is a double board certified, dual-degree surgeon specializing in aesthetic maxillofacial (face and jaw) surgery. He is double-fellowship trained in Head & Neck Oncologic Surgery and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery of the face, head, neck, and jaws. He maintains his private office in the Upper East Side of Manhattan and a faculty appointment at Mount Sinai Health System.
Born in New York City, Dr. Hanna’s path into surgery began with a personal experience—a dog bite to his upper lip. The surgeon turned a difficult event into a positive experience that left a profound impression. He developed a fascination for facial anatomy and reconstructive surgery, which was nurtured by his mother, an artist, as they recreated sketches of facial anatomy together.
Dr. Hanna graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Arts taking a pre-med curriculum and studying sculpture in Florence, Italy. Afterwards, he performed clinical research at Bellevue Hospital/NYU with the Department of Pathology. He then graduated at the top of his class from both the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine (UAB) and NYU College of Dentistry. He was inducted into the Omega Kappa Upsilon Honor Society and won two Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society awards. While at NYU he served as vice president, tutored classmates, and had the highest national board exam score in his class (99th percentile nation-wide).
Specialized Training & Fellowships
Dr. Hanna was accepted into the prestigious 6-year Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, regarded as one of the best in the nation. Here he learned full-scope face and jaw surgery with emphasis on orthognathic, cosmetic, and reconstructive surgery. During this time he completed a 1-year general surgery internship. He won the clinical performance award as an intern and served as chief resident in his final year.
Dr. Hanna then completed the fellowship for Maxillofacial-Head & Neck Oncology & Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Maryland/Shock Trauma Hospital in Baltimore. Here he was trained in reconstruction of the face, head, neck, and jaws with free tissue transplant surgery for tumor and trauma related defects, as well as treating cancer of these regions.
Next Dr. Hanna received a rare opportunity for a second fellowship in Head & Neck Surgical Oncology with the Department of Otolaryngology (ENT) at the NY Head & Neck Institute, Northwell Health-Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. Here he was trained in full-scope head and neck surgery including minimally invasive thyroid/parathyroid, melanoma, robotic surgery, tonsil cancer, and facial reconstruction. Dr. Hanna is likely the only surgeon in the nation to have this unique combination of training.
During his training, Dr. Hanna was directly mentored by past and current presidents of the American Head & Neck Society, American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, American Skull Base Society, American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, and American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. These include renowned maxillofacial, head and neck/microvascular, and facial plastic surgeons: Dennis Kraus, Peter Waite, Robert Ord, Patrick Louis, and Peter Cosantino. Dr. Hanna is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Head & Neck Society.
