Rhinoplasty

What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose to bring balance, refinement, and harmony to the face. Whether the goal is subtle contouring or more dramatic structural change, rhinoplasty is customized to the facial proportions, breathing function, and aesthetic goals.
Our approach goes beyond simply reshaping the nose. We take into account nasal symmetry, cartilage support, airway function, and how the nose fits naturally within the context of the entire face, including the cheeks, lips, and eyes. The goal is to achieve results that feel balanced, timeless, and authentic to each patient’s unique aesthetic.

Benefits of
Rhinoplasty
- Refined nasal width, length, dorsal profile, or nasal tip projection, as well as nasal tip support and shape
- Improved nostril symmetry and balance
- Improvement of internal nasal problems (deviated septum, collapse) to enhance breathing
- Harmonizing the nose with the rest of the face (midface, lips, jawline)
- Subtle, elegant change that matures well over time
Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
Anyone in good general health who wants to improve the shape or function of their nose. It is best performed after facial growth is complete (commonly ages 16-18 or older, depending on gender and development).
Will my breathing improve after rhinoplasty?
Yes. Our rhinoplasty is functional as well as aesthetic. We often correct issues like deviated septum or weak cartilage during the same procedure, improving airflow while refining shape.
Where will the incisions be?
Rhinoplasty can be performed using a closed or open approach. In the open approach, a small incision is made at the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils) to allow precise reshaping. Incisions inside the nose are hidden and heal naturally.
Will there be scars?
Externally, any scar (such as at the columella) is minimal and typically heals very subtly. Most incisions are internal and invisible once healed.
Are cartilage grafts ever necessary?
Yes, when additional support or structural refinement is needed, cartilage can be harvested from the septum, ear, or rib to reinforce the tip, dorsum, or sides of the nose.
What type of anesthesia is used?
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia to ensure safety and comfort.
How long does this surgery take?
Typically 2-3 hours depending on complexity.
Do I need to stay in the facility overnight?
No, the vast majority of patients return home the same day for this procedure.
How painful is recovery?
Discomfort is generally mild, with more pressure or congestion than pain. Most patients tolerate the post-operative period well with standard pain medication. Swelling for the first several days after surgery will hinder you from breathing comfortably through your nose.
When can I return to normal life and physical activity?
Most patients can return to day-to-day social activities and light exercise within one week. Avoid heavy or contact sports for at least 4-6 weeks. The nose should be protected from bumping or direct trauma during healing.
How soon can I travel after my surgery?
We typically ask patients to remain in town for a period of 1-2 weeks before flying. However, car rides of 2-4 hours are okay the following day in most cases. (We would still like to see you for a post-op visit at the one-week mark.)
How long will it be until I see the final result?
You will see early improvement as swelling recedes, but the final shape continues to refine over 6-12 months as tissues settle and soften.
Can rhinoplasty be combined with other procedures?
Yes. Many patients combine rhinoplasty with chin augmentation, facelift, or jaw surgery, especially when interested in overall facial balance and harmony.
What to Expect
After Surgery
- Your post-operative plan will include close follow-up care and individualized guidance on nasal taping and internal splints, as well as safe timelines for physical activity, exercise, and exposure to sun or trauma
- Many patients are comfortable returning to social activity within one week; full healing and refinement may take a few months. Final contour and subtle changes may continue to evolve during the first year
- A molded external splint is applied for 5-7 days to protect shape and support healing
- Mild to moderate swelling, bruising around the eyes and nose, and nasal congestion are normal in the first week
- Nasal breathing may feel constricted initially as internal swelling resolves
- Pain is usually mild and well managed with oral medication
- Exercise: Very light activity such as a brisk walk or a light stationary bike is encouraged as soon as the patient feels ready for it after surgery. Moderate exercise is usually resumed in about 3-4 weeks and heavy exercise in 6-8 weeks
